Martial Arts - 5 Ways Too Build Your Self-Confidence

September 30th, 2008 by Administrator

If you appreciate a strong, healthy self confidence that carries you through overwhelming times and drives you to achieving your most far reaching goals, martial arts is for you.

A person’s self-confidence is like a muscle, it needs to be exercised in order to grow and develop. In the 20 plus years that I’ve been teaching Martial Arts in our community we have developed a 5 step approach to building self-confidence. These 5 steps can be learned by anyone - with the right guidance:

1. Correct Body Posture. The importance of the correct body posture is paramount. We all send hidden, sub-conscious messages with our body language and the way we carry ourselves. Carry yourself with pride, confidence and security. Carry yourself like a successful person and your confidence will show.

2. Proper Eye Contact. Making proper eye contact when speaking to others has a huge effect on the conversation. Have you ever been talking to somebody and instantly felt connected? Like you’ve known this person forever? Chances are, they understand the importance of body language, and proper eye-contact.

3. Goal Setting. Goal setting is talked about by everybody, and most people understand the importance of this process. Then why do most people miss their mark? Because they don’t have the discipline and confidence to see the goal through. Our process teaches you the right way to set goals and actually achieve them!

4. Communication. Inspiring those around you is critical to getting what you want. Whether they are your children, co-workers, employees or boss, good leaders are inspirational. We teach this inspirational formula.

5. Mentors. All of the skills above, a healthy body and mind combined with a good mentor or two will make all the difference in the world for your happiness and success.

Mr. Robert Jones runs three successful martial arts schools located in Bellevue, Lynnwood, and Kent Washington. He has been helping families make positive changes in their lives through martial arts for over 20 years. He has also written two guides on how to pick a martial arts school. One for adults and one for parents wanting to pick the right school for their children. He can be reached at martialadvice@hotmail.com or at the Academy of Kempo Martial Arts. 800-508-6141.

Self-Defense, Safety, and The 6 Keys to Effectiveness

September 28th, 2008 by Administrator

When most people think of self-defense, what usually comes to mind is protecting oneself from the physical onslaught from a criminal attacker. And, while this is not, in itself, a problem, it is however, only a small part of being able to be safe and free from harm in Today’s often dangerous world.

The following is a list of the major key skill areas that should be developed if you are truly seeking to be able to avoid or escape from an attacker bent on seeing you as his victim.

Key #1 - General Awareness

It goes without saying that, if you don’t believe that danger exists in the world, or more to the point, that danger will never find you, then you will do little or nothing to insure your safety. In addition, even if you do understand the dangers inherent in your world, which can be assumed as you’re reading this, it’s important to not fall into the trap of believing that the police, military, or government can and should be the ones to protect you. When push-comes-to-shove, and you’re the one facing an enraged attacker directing his wrath at you, you will be responsible for your own safety in those first few, precious, seconds.

Key #2 - Awareness of Surroundings

While most so-called self-defense experts tend to lump “awareness” into one category, the truth is that there are many levels to this “skill of directing the mind where it is most needed.” While Key #1 focuses our attention on the larger world-view of the presence of danger and our personal responsibility for our own welfare, this key is directed at the details of the moment. Here we’re paying attention to “what’s going on around us.” The fact is that, the better our ability to pay attention and recognize danger as it begins to take shape, the greater our ability to avoid, escape, or neutralize its effect on us BEFORE it has a chance to touch us at all.

That’s what Danger Prevention Tactics are all about. And, especially for those of us who want to avoid fighting at all costs, it is the key to defending against most of the dangers that others fall victim to every day. You can read more about this powerful video and mastering the skills of danger avoidance at http://www.warrior-concepts-online.com/self-defense-video-dpt1.html

Key #3 - Escaping to Safety

While awareness will not prevent danger from appearing in your world, what it will do is to allow you to respond to it sooner. And this is the powerful secret used by the professionals and experts who regularly face danger literally every day of their lives. No, awareness alone will not save you, but it will allow you to escape from the danger before it gets close enough to cause damage. The trick here is to develop multiple routes to places that you visit regularly. Also, developing the ability to recognize and plan for escape routes out of places like traffic, restaurants, your own home, aircraft if you travel, and the like are all important to your overall safety plan. Remember too to validate all safety information that comes your way as most of what is out there has been written, not by actual survivors, but by people who have the job of writing safety procedures. And, as any expert or survivor will tell you, what sounds perfectly logical in theory, may be completely and totally useless in the heat of the moment!

Key #4 - Distracting the Attacker

The fact that your day is filled with demands for your attention, distractions, confusion, and input coming from a hundred different directions at once, can make even the most disciplined meditation master open to attack by a determined assailant. Add to this, all the trickery and manipulative deception used by various types of attackers, and you can see that it’s virtually impossible to be aware of everything. And that sets you up for the potential of an attack that comes seemingly “out of the blue.” Where distance is required to effectively escape from an impending attack, you may not have this luxury when you suddenly realize that you’re the target of an attacker already standing right in front of you.

But, this still doesn’t mean that you have to jump right to the physical aspects of self-defense. It’s important to remember that, regardless of your martial arts rank, how many tricks you know, or even whether or not you’re carrying a weapon, moving directly to physically fighting with your assailant provides the greatest chance for something going wrong.

Instead, you can use tactics and strategies that involve humor, feigning ignorance, or even faking a heart attack, to diffuse the situation and change a would-be attack situation into one where the assailant becomes an ally. Here, it’s important to remember that we want to avoid mentioning the possibility of an attack but instead, to distract the assailant by redirecting his or her attention away from you as a target.

Key #5 - Dissuading

When you can’t avoid, escape, or even distract the attacker and it appears that they are determined to unleash their punishment on you, you still have one more card to play before having to resort to fighting. At this point, you must become very focused yourself and understand that this is your last chance to stop things from going “too-far.” Here, you must be able to look squarely at your antagonist and, with your words, body language and raw determination, communicate that you will not allow them to carry our their plan - that you will not comply or become their victim.

It’s important to understand that, even though there it’s estimated that there is an assault every 17 seconds in the US, that a full 70% or better of these can be handled by Keys 1 through 5. It only stands to reason that you should know as much as possible about these important areas and make sure that you have several skills in each area that will work to serve you if and when you should ever need them. If you’re looking for a good source to learn more about these important key elements in a sound self-defense strategy, as well as what you’ll have to deal with from your own body and mind’s physio-emotional responses to stress and danger, make sure you read the book, “The Karate Myth: Why Most Martial Arts and Self-Defense Programs Don’t Work and How to Be Safe in Today’s World”

Key #6 - Physically Handle the Attack

When all else has failed, no matter what you believe, think, or wish would have or should have happened, when the fists start flying - the blade comes in to bite into and open your flesh - or the bullets start coming in your direction, it’s time for effective, efficient, and proper physical action. There’s a saying that goes, “Survivors Live Where Others Die.” It’s ultimately up to you, and the actions you take, long before the attack happens as to whether you will be a “survivor” or an “other.” The choice is yours.

Minimise Problems when Purchasing a Spanish Country Home

September 25th, 2008 by Administrator

Spanish property and in particular Spanish country homes have had a particularly bad press recently. Horror stories of people having their homes bulldozed when it is later discovered they were built without the correct planning licenses are not uncommon. However if the buyer does his research correctly and uses a Spanish Property expert to check out the property deeds and planning regulations buying a home in Spain is no more risky than purchasing in the UK or the US. In fact some Spanish Mortgage brokers will check all these factors before sourcing a mortgage for your chosen property. A good example of an expert Spanish mortgage company are International Mortgage Solutions based in Marbella will who check the deeds and planning regulations on any property to make sure you are actually buying what you think you are.

Buying a Spanish country home can be an exciting adventure. The first thing to do is make sure that you know how much you can obtain in the way of financing. This will give you an idea of what you can afford to spend when purchasing a home. Remember to include things like initial repairs, taxes, insurance and furnishings and appliances if necessary.

There are a wide variety of different types of properties that you can purchase throughout the country. Spanish country homes range from modern properties with all the latest features to isolated ruins with no water or electricity. The first thing after arranging for the amount of financing that you can afford is to check and see what is available in the area you are looking at moving into. There are a number of things to consider. Country homes range from property located in small towns or villages, homes that are in the countryside but not too far from amenities to isolated homes that are some distance from any real community.

Determining where you want to live is going to determine what is available for you to purchase. The age and condition of the property is an important consideration, as it will directly affect what extra costs you will incur on top of the actual purchase price. Older homes are probably going to need more work or repairs than you are going to find with new homes.

Once you have determined financing and location you may want to consider the style of house that you want to purchase. Spain has a rich and varied tradition and a number of cultures have had their influence over the centuries. Depending on your location this influence may be more significantly felt in the architecture and design than others.

Climate Modification and Volcanoes

September 24th, 2008 by Administrator

Climate modification is a multi-faceted and complex subject. In this article, we take a look at the relationship between climate modification and volcanoes.

Climate Modification and Volcanoes

The climate modification debate is a nasty one. Parties pick their positions, dig in and refuse to listen to the rants of the other side. Lost in the yelling is the simple fact that climate modification is a natural phenomenon to some extent. For proof, we need merely look at the materials kicked out by volcanoes.

It is an undeniable fact of the earth record that volcanoes have changed the climate during certain periods. Small explosions don’t have much impact, but large explosions send massive amounts of material and gases into the atmosphere. The gases include carbon dioxide, the ultimate bugaboo greenhouse gas. Beyond these gases, however, volcanoes can kick out so much debris and ash that the material in the atmosphere can actually block out the sun or reduce the warming effect.

Mount St. Helens is the most studied and well known recent eruption. Unless you have been meditating in a cave for the last 20 years, you know that the volcano exploded on May 18, 1980. The eruption was powerful enough to flatten everything for 17 miles, immediately turning 10 million trees into so much firewood. The huge volcanic ash cloud stretched halfway across the United States, but barely had an impact on global temperatures.

In contrast, the eruption of the El Chichon volcano in 1982 had a measurable climate impact. El Chichon is located in Mexico and was a much smaller eruption than Mount St. Helens. Still, the average temperature around the globe cooled by one degree. What scientist learned is the climate modification impact of volcanoes is highly dependent on the type of explosion. The materials from Mount St. Helens fell out of the atmosphere quickly, while El Chichon belched enormous amounts of sulfur that remained in the atmosphere for much longer.

One of the problems with climate modification is it occurs over a relatively long period of time. Since we started paying attention to the situation, we have not had a chance to see the impact of a major eruption. The stuff we see on television is really small potatoes compared to historically eruptions of note. For example, Mount St. Helens threw roughly a half a cubic mile of material into the air. In 1815, a volcano in Indonesia belched 24 cubic miles of material into the atmosphere. Obviously, one has to imagine it impacted the climate of the earth.

Is there a relationship between climate modification and volcanoes? Undoubtedly. From what we see, however, the relationship is generally of a short duration and not an explanation for the rising temperatures we are seeing currently.

A Great Plant For Sellersville - the Burning Bush

September 21st, 2008 by Administrator

A deciduous shrub from the Staff-Tree Family (Celastraceae)

The burning bush grows well in most areas of Sellersville , Bucks County Pa. Burning Bush, a non-native species from China and Korea, has escaped from the ornamental plantings into urban and rural areas. It travels by way of its seed. This plant is found in forests and brushy areas. This vase-shaped shrub has great red fall foliage, which glows for weeks in early to mid-autumn. Burning Bushes can be sheared into hedges or globes in landscape plantings. Hedges from burning bushes can be very dense giving good screening even in the winter. If left unpruned, the compact form of Burning Bush will grow to about 12 feet tall and 15 feet wide, and the winged form will grow to about 15 feet tall and 20 feet wide. In our area it propagates naturally in shaded areas. We obtain some of our stock from seedlings we gather from a small farm cemetery on our property. It even regrows after transplanting from the empty holes where roots are exposed. Burning Bush is adaptable to a variety of soil conditions. Fertile to sterile, organic to clay, acidic to alkaline, rocky to sandy this plant proves its strenght. It does not like wet soils, but does well in dry soils. Its small fiberous roots are near the surface and responds well to root pruning. Balling and burlapping this shrub does little damage for the plant can take abuse and recover quickly. If you have a brown thumb, then this plant is for you. You can see more of Bill’s planting tips and articles at http://www.seedlingsrus.com or http://www.zone5trees.com

What Christmas Gifts Do People Actually Want?

September 20th, 2008 by Administrator

If you are buying several different gifts for Christmas hoping that the person will like them, then this article is for you. It would be a great idea to get them a gift card and let them choose what they really want and then you can spend the rest of the day enjoying each others company.

Christmas gets more over-blown and expensive with each passing year. Christmas is time for picking up piles and piles of wrapping paper and trying to figure out how to fit gifts in cars, even though every year we swear that the next year we will be better prepared. Sure it was fun to get gifts when we were kids; but now that we’re adults do we need to continue the crazy mall shopping every year?

The obstacle occurs, because everyone has different tastes. The theory is that if you buy the person a lot of gifts, chances are they will like at least one of them. If you really want to go all out for someone, then do some research first. Check with people who know what they want and need. Ask the person a few probing questions throughout the year so when gift time comes you will have something to go on. This will hopefully stop you from buying those useless gadgets and trinkets. Gift cards are always an option, when every other idea seems likely to fail. You can personalize these with a few home-baked cookies or ornaments, or with a personalized card that lets them know that you wanted them to have the last say about their gift. The gift of getting to spend time with family and friends is way greater than any gift can give you.

Though many people agree that gift cards are impersonal, isn’t it more impersonal to buy someone a gift they don’t need or want? Gift cards are a terrific last-minute idea if your inquiries didn’t result in any answers. For the most part people either don’t know what they want, or they don’t know how to express it. This group can also be pleased in a variety of ways. Here is a great site for some Christmas gift ideas for everyone.

Why a Bus Wrap Can Help Drive Traffic to You

September 17th, 2008 by Administrator

Think of a vehicle wrap as a billboard on wheels. While a static billboard can only reach the people that drive past it (mostly the same people each day), a bus drives around a large portion of the city, bringing your message with it.

The wrap visual is also larger than most mediums…this plus motion equals eye-catching! While bus sizes vary, a side wrap can be 40 feet long while an image on the back end can be nearly ten feet wide. Imagine your logo driving around, several feet wide.

Another advantage to the bus wrap is that it’s a fairly new advertising medium, which equates to availability and affordability. Also, if a new client is not lined up to take that space after you, your ad may run longer than contracted for free!

When preparing your ideas, be sure you have a good quality logo, as well as any other images you might wish to use. Generally they are able to print over the window area, so be sure to ask so that you can maximize available space. (Also, printing on the dark windows creates extra contrast which increases visibility.) Try to keep your message short and sweet…long website addresses or lengthy directions are not memorable nor great for quick readability. A good rule to follow is Image - Tag - Logo. In other words, have an eye-catching graphic/photo, the tagline that ties it in with your company (like, “The Zoo Will Drive You Wild!”), and your company logo. You can put an abbreviated form of the address, like an intersection rather than an actual numeric address, or a phone number or website address if they can be easily memorized. And don’t be afraid to include a short offer! Just add the tag, “Say you saw it on the bus!”…it’s a great way to quantify results!

San Vito Lo Capo, an almost unspoilt gem and the pride of the province of Trapani, is an ancient fishing town with a strongly Arabic flavour which is well worth exploring.
Here, light, perfumes and flavours mingle to produce a landscape with typically Mediterranean colours and waters: low white houses clad in bougainvillea and a beach of pure white sand whose unusual arc shape enfolds a turquoise blue sea concealing ancient treasures in a kilometre-long embrace towards the Mediterranean.
