Old Age Isn’t For Sissies

January 30th, 2009 by Administrator

It must have been more than 25 years ago when I first saw that bumper sticker. “Cute,” I chuckled to myself, “What will they think of next?” (How about “Whirled Peas”?)

Now in my fifties, I’m learning first hand what they’re talking about. From the frumpy grey-haired stranger that looks back at me from the bathroom mirror every day to the closet full of too-small clothes that I really should donate to the local mission. And I’m beginning to understand my grandmother’s affinity to Ben Gay.

In fact, it’s the aching joints that bother me the most. After all, I don’t have to look in the mirror, and I’m quite comfortable wearing my sweats most of the time. But denial can only take a gal so far. When I’m lying in bed with an aching shoulder, it’s not denial that helps me fall asleep.

It’s my herbal heat wrap, with a little help from the microwave oven.

I discovered this delightful remedy at a local tourist attraction, complete with free entertainment, numerous food vendors, and lots of “mom and pop” product booths. As I walked through the small vintage firehouse, the smell of lavender was inviting, so I took a closer look.

20 minutes later, and about $60.00 lighter, I walked away with my only inedible purchase of the day. I had this lizard shaped thingee around my neck, and a more versatile rectangular wrap in the bag.

Having had my heat wraps for several weeks now, I can wholeheartedly recommend them. Of course, I recommend Heat Treats herbal wraps because that’s what I have and I know they work. These heat wraps are filled with a combination of flax seed and lavender. The flax seed releases a moist heat, while the lavender helps me relax.

While there’s nothing I can do to prevent getting older, at least I can put off feeling older for a while longer.

Now if only I could solve my “secretary spread” as easily.

A Beginners Guide to Gaming Establishment Gambling: Gambling Pastimes Gambling Devotees like to Participate in

January 30th, 2009 by Administrator

So maybe you have not caught on to betting room gaming, then do read on… For clarity’s sake: a gambling saloon is a house that caters to gambling. At such a place, visitors are expected to take chances by challenging the coin-operated machines or alternative games. Casino games ordinarily include transparent probabilities incorporated that maintain that the gaming establishment grasps on to its upper hand versus the customers.

Far too many gaming hall games may cause you to get addicted very speedily. E.g. there’s the notorious slot-machine, a coin operated instrument with 3 plus discs that gyrate when a handle on its side is pulled. The gadget consistently will spill winnings with reference to a given series of glyphs seen on the dials on the appliance. Unfortunately, gaming room games tend to push the false impression of power, thereby conning the gambling buff: the participant is granted alternatives, but these will not really compensate for the player’s overall disadvantage. This is due to the betting hall not refunding the full stake as expected. This tactic can generally be found in popular casino games like blind poker, craps, roulette or blackjack.

Seven-card stud is genuinely an incredibly popular casino game. The gaming fans, playing with partially concealed hands, will bet into a pot in the center which is ultimately awarded to the last punter blessed with the leading combination of cards. (Of course, the coolest bluffing hand can win) Quite like five-card stud, blackjack too is a very fashionable casino pastime. Much of its fame is thanks to its peculiar mix of chance and savvy and choice making, not to forget a method tagged “card counting”. It is a craft by which gambling buffs are in a position to bend the probabilities of the game to their profit both by betting and systematic opetations based on the cards deployed.

“Craps” is the name of yet another highly popular gambling hall pastime utilizing the throw of a couple of dice. Guests make bets on the score of one cycle, or on a series of cycles of 2 dice. Dissimilar to blackjack, there isn’t any proven bona fide killer betting system you could exploit to boost the chances. Roulette is a prominent game of luck - a croupier whirls a roulette wheel that contains precisely thirtyseven (European roulette) or, respectively 38 (American roulette) differently numbered pockets in which a tossed pellet must come to lie, announcing the final winning number Now if our gamer bets on a specific number which actually is successful so she is really having a lucky day, the dividend is 35:1, the initial bet itself will be paid back. Ergo in totality it’s multiplied by thirty six.

We recommend you try to be careful however, because such gaming room pastimes can be very much habit forming. So many lives have indisputably been wrecked in the course of gambling + albeit it surely might be a lot of fun, please do venture to exert moderation.

From AlefBet to Talmud - How I Learned Hebrew

January 27th, 2009 by Administrator

by Neal Walters. I first had interest in learning Hebrew in about 1990 when planning to go to Israel. Due to the Desert Storm, the trip was postponed until 1996. So in the late 1980s, how does one go about learning Hebrew in the middle of Oklahoma? There wasn’t any internet yet. I ordered the Foreign Service Institute. These are courses created by the US government, supposedly used to teach military and/or diplomats. The cassette tapes that came with FSI were useful, but the book lacked a lot. It was designed by the government for an instructor to use in a classroom environment, NOT for an individual to use for self study. Even today, I have never gone back to complete that book. Back then, Borders was building it’s first huge book stores in large cities. On a business trip, I visited one, and found a small selection of Hebrew books not normally found in other bookstores. The book that helped me master the alphabet was a “reader” that was full of practice exercises of reading short two to four letter syllables or words. I began learning more and more prayer book Hebrew by attending synagogue. Each week, certain tunes would stick in my mind, and I would go home and try to learn the words. Music and singing definitely helps with the memorization. I used Menahem Mansoor’s “Biblical Hebrew: Step by Step” to get an introduction to Biblical Hebrew. Later a friend taught Biblical Hebrew to a small group using Jacob Weingreen’s “A Practical Grammar for Classical Hebrew”. This is a very serious book, which we finished a couple of years later, doing one lesson every week or two. To really know Hebrew, one must study both Biblical and Modern. I remember using two short courses that were books that came with 3 or 4 cassette tapes: “Hugo Language Course: Hebrew in Three Months” and also Eliezar Tirkel’s “Every Hebrew”. I found that I liked the Hugo course slightly better, but learned something from each. In 2005, I registered for Hebrew IV and V via an online course offered by Hebrew College in Boston. It used the text “Hebrew From Scratch - Part II” (with 5 CDs available). Even though I audited the course, it was required to submit homework weekly, and meet with our teacher online for about 45 minutes per week. Later, I went on to take other classes, which include an introduction to Aramaic via the Talmud, and classes that required reading Medieval Hebrew (such as aggadic literature). Learning Hebrew can be very rewarding. I still can’t speak it as well as I would like, but the journey is still on going. Teaching Hebrew to others is one or the best ways to continue learning the language. Children and adults both learn Hebrew the fast and easy way with the multimedia Hebrew courses created by Neal Walters. You can see video demos of his courses at http://HebrewResources.com. Update: Artic National Wildlife Refuge: Senate Rejects “Oil Drilling”; Approves “Oil Hunting.”

January 26th, 2009 by Administrator

Fueled by skyrocketing gasoline prices, the Senate once again took up debate on oil drilling in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge.

The members were sharply split along party lines, with Democrats maintaining that the very idea of intruding on that pristine national treasure with oil rigs is an affront to every responsible American’s instinct for wilderness preservation, while Republicans were more inclined to advocate tapping the oil for the preservation of their electoral status as members of the Senate.

The preservation of the American public’s ability to pay for something besides gasoline was also mentioned in passing by one Senator.

Prodded to act by an impatient President, seeking the preservation of whatever positive numbers he still maintains in the popularity polls, the two sides finally arrived at a compromise agreement.

The word “drilling” would be forever struck from the bill and will be replaced with a term Democrats feel is far more appropriate to an area so rife with wildlife, that is, the word “hunting.”

Once the bill was redrafted to specify the crucial change from “oil drilling” to “oil hunting,” the Senate passed it with near unanimity.

It will now go to the President for his signature, which is expected about as soon as he can locate a pen. Shortly thereafter, he will address the American public about the breakthrough legislation.

He is expected to note that he has long advocated drilling in the wildlife refuge but has been blocked by a divisive Congress. He is also expected to assure a fuming public that the price of gasoline is certain to go down as soon as the pipelines are in place, the drills hit gushers, and the oil companies agree to build more refineries. During the years that will be required for all of the foregoing conditions to be met, he is expected to encourage the public to conserve gas by hitching their cars together, so only one out of every six vehicles will have the engine running.

Mr. Bush was so pleased by the passage of the bill that he went straight to Vice President Cheney’s office to have a celebratory conversation, but he was informed that the Vice President, upon hearing about the amendment to the measure, immediately packed up and headed to the refuge to enjoy a pristine weekend of hunting.

The President telephoned his airplane and explained that the measure called for oil hunting, not hunting for animals. The Vice President acknowledged the difficulty but explained that, since the word “hunting” was in the amendment, he felt he was on safe grounds to interpret the meaning by putting the primary emphasis on “hunting.”

They finally agreed that disagreements about emphasis and subordination were unlikely grounds to exacerbate the recent calls from more irascible circles for their impeachment.

Tax Quotes and Jokes for Tax Season

January 25th, 2009 by Administrator

Like death, paying taxes is inevitable. In the case of most Americans, tax season is just around the corner. If only paying taxes was so easy.

As you begin pulling out those receipts, the eraser and reading plain English tax instructions that Einstein couldn’t figure out, you’re going to need a good laugh. Here you go:

1. I am proud to be paying taxes in the United States. The only thing is - I could be just as proud for half the money.

2. People who complain about taxes can be divided into two classes: men and women.

3. Like mothers, taxes are often misunderstood, but seldom forgotten.

4. The best measure of a man’s honesty isn’t his income tax return. It’s the zero adjust on his bathroom scale.

5. Next to being shot at and missed, nothing is really quite as satisfying as an income tax refund.

6. A tax loophole is something that benefits the other guy. If it benefits you, it is tax reform.

7. Few of us ever test our powers of deduction, except when filling out an income tax form.

8. What’s the difference between a mosquito and an IRS agent? One is a bloodsucking parasite, the other is an insect.

9. It would be nice if we could all pay our taxes with a smile, but normally cash is required.

10. The government deficit is the difference between the amounts of money the government spends and the amount it has the nerve to collect.

11. Taxes: Of life’s two certainties, the only one for which you can get an automatic extension

12. What Mae West said about sex is true about taxes. All tax cuts are good tax cuts; even bad tax cuts are good tax cuts,

13. The federal income tax system is a disgrace to the human race. - Jimmy Carter

If nothing else, it is good to know that a former President of the United States feels the same way about taxes as you. If only someone would agree to a flat tax, millions of Americans could dispense with the aggravation and stress of filing taxes each year.

RAISE YOUR SWIM WEAR BUYING I. Q.

January 23rd, 2009 by Administrator

Finding the right swimsuit can be a tall order for some of us. Not because we are tall, because we don’t fit the run-of-the-mill swimsuits. But, atlas, with a little patience you can find the perfect suit to flatter your body.

Here are a few tips.

How about a one-piece or a two-piece? There are plenty of sexy one-piece suits being worn on the beach. They do not reveal it all, just enough to keep things interesting. The trick is to find one that fits your body type.

Are you swimming or sunbathing? If you are into swimming, a one-piece definitely is for you. Find one that doesn’t cut into the shoulders, comfortable with stretchy fabric. Don’t get anything that ties. You don’t want anything to come undone while doing laps!

If you are small on top, you may want a little swimsuit from Brazil. Their swimsuits are cut for the smaller bust line. Also look for one with some padding, underwire or demi-bra style. These help to enhance the bust line. Avoid tops with too much fabric or poor fit. Opt for separates where you can choose your top and bottom separately.

If you are well endowed, you may need some extra support. Underwire tops work well and look great. Also, halter-tops are a good choice by offering support. One piece swimsuits with some structure in the bust work well. Avoid strapless tops and those with tiny tops that offer minimal coverage. And again, make sure you choose your top and bottoms separately.

Those with short legs can flatter their figures with suits cut high on the thigh. This will make your leg look much longer. One trick is to wear a solid bottom bikini with a printed top. This will draw the eye upward and give you a longer look. Avoid boy shorts and skirted bikinis as they draw the eye downward and make you look shorter.

Clothes look good on the long body shape but you need to make sure you don’t look like a bean pole! Bright colors and horizontal strips work well with this body type. Boys short are perfect for slimming your hips. Avoid horizontal stripes, high necklines and solid dark colors.
