Supreme Winter Snow across the French Alps

January 18th, 2009 by Administrator

Global warming and the recession, these double threats have passed by the Alps, at least for this Christmas. But it may have been so wholly contrary. Ahead of the holidays ski resorts in the La Mongie locale were isolated when snow storms came down. Road passes such as the crowded Col du Les Trois Vallees were cut. In that location there was no mains or telephone lines, locals had to be evacuated to pro tem accommodation, it seemed as though it were the repeat of 1996.

It appears that all publicity is good publicity. Super Besse appeared every evening on the French news. As soon as mains was fixed bookings started to pour in, attracted by the superior conditions.

La Clusaz and nearby Grand Massif lay claim to virtually 5 feet base on the upper areas at 2200 m alt. and 2.1 metres at the end of the runs. Presently a record for the French Alps. Chastreix-Sancy states there is three m at the top of the resort. Alas an avalanche has swept away a pylon of the drag lift that serves the domain. It will be broken until mid Jan.

In other places in the Alps inquiries are up 15% in Hautacam, Alpe d Huez and Plateau de Beille. Les Houches has 99.8% tenancy and traded a record breaking number of passes on Friday. That is great for luxury ski chalets and large snowboarding companies.
