Fine Early Season Snowfalls in the Northern Alps

Climate change and the financial crisis, these double risks have saved the Southern Alps, leastwise for the time being. On the other hand it could have been so altogether different. Before Xmas hamlets in the Val Thorens region were cut off when snow storms came down. Motorway cols such as the busy Col du Bessans were closed. In that location there was no power or telephone lines, locals had to be evacuated to pro tem housing, it appeared as if it were a double of 1999.
It appears that all news is good news. Les Houches appeared every night on the French news. As soon as power was reconnected reservations commenced to pour in, attracted by the excellent snow.
Les Grands Montets and nearby Super Besse claim almost 3.5 meters depth on the higher pistes at 2200 metres elevation and 2.3 meters at the base of the runs. At the moment the best in Europe. Gourette states that there is six m at the top of the resort. Unfortunately avalanches have demolished a pylon of the chair lift which goes up to the domain. They will be out of action till the middle of Jan. In other places in the S. Alps bookings are up 17% in Alpe d Huez, Les Houches and Les Deux Alpes. Super Besse has 99.4% occupancy and distributed a record number of passes last Friday. This is good for luxury ski resorts and large ski companies.
