It’s Time For Some Steak

March 31st, 2009 by Administrator

Recently, I was reviewing our website statistics. One of the sites that had a link to mine caught me by surprise. Since this is a family publication, I won’t include the name of the website. But, let’s just say it contains a four-letter word that people do not use in most business circles.

The website was basically a bulletin board for people to rant about other companies. The posting about my website started out with the subject, ‘Is this website just a little too slick?’ The postings went on to say that my website had a lot of sizzle, but no steak.

My first thought was, ‘How dare they say something so rude after I worked so hard on my site. Are they trying to say that my business has no substance? They know nothing about me and what I do. I can’t believe they would attack MY business image.’

You see, those of you who have met me know that I am a small business image consultant. I work on everything from customer service to documentation and training. Basically, all the behind-the-scenes things that affect the business image. How could MY website have a bad image?

Then I took a step back. And, with a huge gulp of reluctance, I admitted to myself that they were right. Earlier that week, I had started to redefine my business services. Small business image consulting no longer ‘fit’ the real me. And somehow that was showing through on my website. It WAS a bit too slick. It was not getting to the essence of what I wanted to say.

Instead of just changing my website, I decided to take on a more important endeavor. I took a look at my identity and my brand. I found this amazing book called Make A Name For Yourself by Robin Fisher Roffer. This was the wake-up call that I needed. After pouring over the book, I began to get in touch with my natural gifts.

While documentation has always been a part of my business, it wasn’t the part that I ‘played up’ at networking meetings. Small business image consulting sounded exotic and sexy. It got people talking about customer service and the importance of it. It got me speaking engagements. It got me lots of press. This was all of the sizzle that they mentioned on that bulletin board. But, it didn’t get me what I needed most. The steak - more phone calls and emails requesting my services, and ultimately, more satisfaction.

I decided to put my writing services in the forefront. In addition to my technical writing, I now specialize in lengthy documentation and press releases. The process of redefining my business was a scary one. All these feelings of fear and inadequacy appeared. I started to wonder what people would think of the change. Would they think that this was bad for my business image?

Then, I started to wonder how many other business owners are just offering what sounds good. How many of them aren’t expressing their natural gifts through their business. How many are afraid to make a change?

None of us should be afraid to redefine our services or to create a brand where there wasn’t one before. Now I am more secure in what I do. I am true to myself, my passion, and my gifts. It’s a freedom and a liberation that I’ve never felt before.

My services no longer have an exotic and sexy sound to them. But, at least now I can offer the sizzle AND the steak.

Zodiac Love Match - Can the stars be right?

March 31st, 2009 by Administrator

As a somewhat older gentleman (but still fairly good looking and somewhat romantic?) I have always enjoyed good relationships with the younger folk - Oh! The times I have been called upon over recent years to inspect and give an opinion on some poor new prospective boyfriend.

Of course, it is somewhat flattering to be consulted for such advice by pretty young females. However, my opinions and comment are based more upon my experienced knowledge of the devious thinking of younger males (I once was one) rather than any psychic ability.

I have always held a very open mind to most matters and my sideline interest in psychic and astrology subjects has been generated more as result of relationships with members of the fairer sex who dally in such areas.

More recently, with time on my hands due to health reasons I tended to read more on the subject and, in particular, that of the compatibility of people under their different zodiac signs. So, out of simple curiosity I conducted a simple experiment.

I prepared two lists on which I set down the names of numerous males and females that I had known over the years - friends, lover’s, business etc. I then noted alongside each name my relationship with that person as Excellent-Excellent Romantic-Good or Average. After this, I noted down where possible, each person’s birth date and Zodiac sign. I made many phone calls and researched many old dairies to complete this particular information.

An analysis of the lists threw up that, throughout my life, my most excellent relationships had been with Arian’s, Leo’s, Aquarian’s, Geminis, Taurean’s and Sagittarian’s. Of these, my most Romantic ‘Excellent relationships’ had centred upon Leo’s, Gemini’s & Arian’s plus, one very special sensual Scorpio.

Zodiac research indicated that the female Sagittarian offered the best compatibility choice for my sign of Aries; there were no Sagittarian female romances on my list of females.

There was however, one female at the beginning of my list. She dated way back to my lecherous youth and due to the haze of time I could not recall or remember her birthday.

As I sat one evening and reminisced back some 40 years to that time, I had to conclude, with a somewhat lecherous smile on my face, that this lady had to be the best and most exciting romantic relationship in my life to date. This was a young male older women relationship and a bit of a social no-no at that time. Might turn it into an Ebook one day entitled - ‘Lady Sagittarian’s Lover’ or something similar.

My curiosity gained the better of me and I set to work to trace her and in time managed to locate her surviving son. From him I gained her birthday to discover she had indeed been a Sagittarian.

Can the stars be right? I don’t really know. I can say however that in my case, without doubt, that lovely Sagittarian lady of so long ago was indeed the most exciting romantic activity of my life to date.

Who knows, there may yet still be another fantastic Sagittarian girl out there for this optimistic older Arian? Although one of a little lesser vitality than that exciting Sagittarian princess of so long ago.

The Truth About Home Made Facials

March 30th, 2009 by Administrator

I started making facial masks after reading several books on natural cosmetics. Common ingredients used in home made facials are eggs, lemon, milk, honey, cucumber, tomato, essential oils and lots more fruits, herbs and other ingredients.

The assumption I had was that home made cosmetics, being all natural and preservative free were much safer than the commercial masks you found in stores. A wrong assumption. You know the saying. Never assume anything. It makes an ASS of U and ME. Did you know some of the deadliest poisons on earth are 100% natural?

There are complaints about preservatives irritating the skin and all that. That may be true especially for a person with very sensitive skin. But preservatives actually make cosmetics safe to use. Preservatives kill or at very least, inhibit the bacteria, mold, viruses and nasty things that would otherwise thrive in the cosmetics we use. Commercial preparations usually contain some preservative or other to make these products safe for use. Some of the very high end cosmetic formulations are packed in sterile capsules to do away with or at least, minimimize, the need for preservatives.

If you make your own skin care for use later in the week, chances are, unless you are anal about sterilizing everything and freezing every batch once it has cooled, thawing it only when you are going to use it, and keeping your cosmetics away from the raw meat in the freezer, eventually, you could find yourself using contaminated home made cosmetics, which could lead to a skin irritation.

I used to make my own skin care but found all the precautions I had to take such a hassle, now I buy mine off the shelves.

Even if you make your facial products for immediate use, you have to be careful about using only the freshest ingredients. A mouldy fruit or anything that is spoilt can lead to disastrous results on your skin.

Then there is the safety of the ingredients used in your skincare products.

I once told a pharmacist about the lemon remedy I was using on my pimples. She was horrified. Lemons are highly acidic. Lemon juice is pH 2. Sulphuric acid is pH 1. Lemons can cause a nasty acid burn if you are not careful.

We had a discussion about this. She told me about a customer who showed up with an acid burn. Turns out, she had a sunburn. Back in Australia, she would soothe that sunburn by rubbing cut cucumber over her skin. The juices would ease the sunburn. This time around, she was unlucky. The cucumber she used was more acidic than the ones she was used to and she ended up with a really nasty acid burn.

Though cucumber is soothing, cucumber contains Alpha Hydroxy Acids as do most fruit and some of the other ingredients used in homemade beauty recipes.

You see, in home made skin care, the exact chemical makeup of the ingredients you use may vary, leading to unpleasant results if you are unfortunate. That is why, everytime you make any facial mask, test it on the inside of your wrist first, before you let that mask touch your face.

I was lucky. The lemon facial I did helped clear my skin by killing the bacteria, without burning my skin. The pharmacist said I was fool hardy. As did my cousin who has been making her own beauty products for years already.

Lemon can thin the skin. It is so acidic. The pharmacist thought the other things, like the almond meal I mixed with the lemon juice helped neutralize the extreme acidity. Also, when I used freshly squeezed lemon juice directly on my face, I would dilute it with water first.

Yet the books I read with home made beauty recipes often include lemon in their recipes. After all, lemon has lightening properties. Lemon juice is often used to lighten freckles. Lemon was even recommended in a book by a former model, for use as a toner.

Not all ingredients are that dangerous though. Oats is an excellent ingredient for use in soothing facials. That was recommended to me by a doctor. For my toddler’s rash. Cooked oats in a bag in the bath water is a home remedy to soothe itchy skin. Here is a facial that uses oats and rose water. http://www .womanht.com/facials/RoseOatsFacial.htm

A home made face mask can be as simple as putting some mash fruit your face. Fruity facials tried and tested outlines such experiments with fruit.

Different skin types require different ingredients. Dry skin can use richer, nourishing ingredients. Really dry skin would love the moisturizing effect of sweet almond oil or olive oil. Oily skin, on the other hand would break out in pimples if you try massaging these oils on your face. What works for your best friend may be disastrous on you.

The easiest thing to do nowadays is to simply buy a great mask for your skin type off the shelf for your home facial. I use commercial masks these days after some disastrous experiments trying to find new ingredients for new home made facial masks for my site. The successful facials were published with these Home Made Facials .

How To Choose A Wrinkle Treatment That Really Works

March 28th, 2009 by Administrator

It happens to most of us as we enter our mid-30’s and early 40’s. We look into the mirror one day and see a face we don’t recognize. Sure we noticed those crow’s feet in our mid to late-20’s, but when did those few crow’s feet become a face full of wrinkles? To make it worse, we live in a society where youth is worshipped. Instead of being proud of our graying hair and wrinkles and the wisdom that comes with them we start searching for the fountain of youth.

When we are young our skin contains a wonderful protein called elastin. This is what keeps the skin firm. We also have robust amounts of a protein called collagen which strenghtens our skin. Over time, with aging and with outside influences such as sun exposure and smoking the elastin in our skin actually degenerates. Collagen production slows. This causes the skin to get thinner and impedes moisture entering the skin.

With hundreds of different wrinkle creams available on the market today, and some that cost literally thousands of dollars how do you choose? Some of these high priced products tout that it takes them months to prepare one batch of their wrinkle cream, so it’s only available in very limited quantities. Does this appearance of “exclusivity” mean a product will work? Does high cost guarantee results? Unfortunately, the answer is no.

There are as many different ways for a product to work as there are products. Some of these products produce the immediate effect of reducing fine lines and wrinkles through the use of light. By putting the product on your face you actually deceive the eye by preventing the eye from seeing the shadows that form from wrinkles, hence the skin appears smoother. Some of these products contain hyaluronic acid which is a substance that helps to hydrate the skin by holding in water which helps to make the skin appear plumper. Some new anti wrinkle creams are like botox in a bottle. They use ingredients that help to relax facial muscle contractions.

How do you choose? The first rule of thumb is to stick with well known and established products. Get whatever samples you can. Some creams are very heavy and not suitable for use in hot and humid weather and you might not like the feel of them on your skin. Ask if you can use the product for 30 days with a money back guarantee if you don’t see results. Don’t believe the claim that you have to use a company’s entire product line to see any results. Most companies have made a fortune with “add-on” products like cleansers, toners, and serums. The moisturizer and the serum are usually the highest priced products. Buy only the moisturizer. You will get the best bang for your buck from the moisturizer as it is used over the entire face as opposed to the serum, which is generally only used on trouble spots such the area around the eyes and lips. If you find you like the moisturizer then try the cleanser, and so on. Read up on the product. There is a wealth of information on line and many sites such as consumerhealthdigest.com have already done a lot of the work for you by evaluating many wrinkle creams to see if they live up to their claims.

Ultimately, the best thing that you can do is take care of your skin from the inside out. We’re all stuck with whatever genetics we have but you can help yourself by not smoking, drinking lots of water and eating a healthy diet. Avoid the sun at all costs and use a moisturizer or foundation with SPF protection every day. Have a monthly hydrating facial. After your first several facials you’ll definitely notice an improvement in the appearance of your skin, no matter what wrinkle cream you use.

Just One of Those Mornings

March 28th, 2009 by Administrator

The day started out fine. I slept well and woke at 4:30 to email a fellow author who’s ghostwriting a book on The Power of Positive Thinking. I’d promised a few examples of my own philosophy. You know, the kind of stuff that is infused with optimism and oozes rhapsodic enthusiasm?

The email was more of a treatise on coping mechanisms, or “How to be happy when the world around you crumbles.” I recommend “taking pleasure in the little things” and cited some examples that have helped me in the past, such as soaking in the sunrise or absorbing the winter beauty of a wheat field glistening with ice. If all else fails, I list the things for which I should be thankful, such as: “At least I’m not laying in a ditch in Iraq like our poor, brave soldiers,” or “I’m not riddled with cancer.”

I know. It sounds downright naive. I’ve been called a male “Pollyanna,” before. But heck, it gets me through those tough times and… it actually works!

After writing, I showered, made my lunch, kissed my grandsons goodbye, and slipped into my parka. I fumbled around for my car keys. They were missing! I shrugged, decided to solve the mystery later, and grabbed the spare set. I ventured out into blackness of the early morning and headed for the car. The lights didn’t come on when I opened the door. A sinking feeling settled in my gut. There were my keys, dangling in the ignition, turned to the “ACC” position!

Daughter #3, home from college for Thanksgiving, retrieved something from the van and apparently turned on the key for some mysterious reason. There they’d remained over the long weekend.

I rummaged around the barn and found a set of cables. Next, I ran back to the car, grabbed a spare key for my mother-in-law’s car, and nosed it into position. In the pitch dark, I felt around for the hood release on my van. Where was that darned lever? I couldn’t find it. I grabbed the flashlight that had been smugly waiting for such an emergency in its holder since last Christmas, and searched again. There was NO latch!

Against every fiber in my being, I admitted that I needed to read the blasted manual. I found it after scrabbling around in the glove compartment. The print was tiny - I needed my cheapo drugstore reading glasses. I keep a pair on my bedside table and at work. I sighed, then remembered a rogue pair that was tucked inside my jacket pocket from my last book signing.

For the next five minutes, I flipped through the deceptive “easy owner’s guide” until I finally found a diagram of the car. There was a hood release, but it looked like it was on the seat bottom. I got on my knees again and searched. I pushed and prodded and pulled everything in sight. I scrutinized the diagram again with fingers covered in grease. Wait a minute! Did I read the diagram wrong? Maybe it’s on the lower left side near the gas tank lever! I dropped to my knees again. There it was, hidden around the corner so that I had to crane my neck inside the car to actually see it.

Good for deterring car thieves; bad for stupid new van owners.

The hood was up. I hooked up one side of the batteries. Red to positive, black to negative. The cables wouldn’t stretch from battery to battery. I needed another measly inch. I sighed, got in the other car, backed it up, and nosed it in closer. So close, that my riotous rose bush caught me each time I squeezed past it. Finally, it was done. The van roared to life.

But alas, it wasn’t over.

Breathe. Just breathe.

The radio flashed the word, “Code” and the clock was blank. A faint memory tickled in my brain… the security system! The salesman gave me a card with a code on it. Where had I stashed it? There it was, in my wallet. The only problem was, I couldn’t read the fine print. I patted my pocket for my glasses. They weren’t there. No, they were stuck on my peanut butter toast. I cleaned them off, reset the code, and headed to work.

I grumbled. Then the sun started to rise. The sun kissed the undersides of clouds that glowed gold, gray, and lavender on the horizon. As I drove north, the rays reached higher, splitting the pale pink fingers of dawn.

I started to feel good again, optimistic about the day, and actually looked forward to reconnecting with my colleagues at work. Then I spied the railroad crossing. I was already late for work, and prayed that I’d get across without having to stop.

The lights flashed and the guardrails came down. I put the car in park and laughed at myself. Out loud. It was a belly laugh. And it felt great.

Ah, the power of positive thinking.

Now, how do I reset that infernal dash clock?

Research on Night Working Risks Commences in the UK

March 23rd, 2009 by Administrator

The Chief Medical Officer of the HSE, Dr. Osmond has said that to conclusively end the debate on increased chances of breast cancer amongst women working in late night shifts, the HSE has begun research on the matter.

The BBC quoted him as saying that the HSE has been prompt in hiring a renowned epidemiologist to look into the health hazards of late working hours and to see if there is a link with cancer. The results of the findings are expected in late 2011. Around one-fifth of the work force in the UK, said to be working in night shifts, will be waiting for the research results anxiously.

The statement comes in light of news that the Danish Government, following a ruling by the United Nations agency, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), has begun paying monetary compensation to women who have developed breast cancer probably due to long night shifts at work. So far, 40 women have received the disbursement from the Danish Government in a first of its kind payment.

There has been evidence for a long time to suggest that long, erratic night hours jeopardize the health of employees. There are usually complaints of disturbed sleep, digestive disorders and lethargy, and such people even run a greater risk of meeting with accidents.

Now more than ever all employers especially in potentially dangerous businesses such as construction must be fully aware of health and safety issues and train their staff thoroughly to avoid the serious potential consequences. Contact Workplace Law Training to find out about their range of iosh safely courses which will help to assist your management and staff in all health and safety issues.
