It is said that old age is not for sissies - but it is an eventuality for most of us. However, though we cannot avoid the aging process, it is possible to delay it’s outward signs.
Rhytidectomy, better known as face lift surgery, is one option of those who have either aged prematurely because of heredity or a life spent out in the wind and sun. Certain other lifestyle factors, such as tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption can also cause premature aging. Face lift surgery is of only limited effectiveness when it comes to artificial skin damage, but is an excellent way to deal with the natural causes of aging which are primarily due the loss of collagen that in turn leads to wrinkles and sagging skin.
Face lift surgery has other limitations as well. It will do nothing to change your overall facial structure, such as the size and shape of your nose, cheekbones or chin. There are some methods that dentists use to lengthen the face by addressing the teeth and gums, but these are beyond the scope of rhytidectomy, which deals exclusively with the skin.
Non-surgical treatments such as botox, collagen injections and heat treatments are effective in some cases, but do not address all the causes of aging. While you should definitely ask your doctor about some of these non-surgical alternatives, it is important to understand that they will not yield the same results as an actual rhytidectomy.
Nor will face lift stop the aging process. Your skin will continue to lose collagen, and eventually, you will start to develop wrinkles again. However, this procedure will delay this for many years, provided you take proper care of your skin.
When a surgeon performs a face lift surgery, s/he focuses on those areas of the face that most commonly show the signs of aging namely, smile lines, wrinkles around the eyes and forehead, and the cheeks, which have a tendency to become saggy as muscle tone is lost creating the jowly or bulldog look. During the surgery, skin is tightened and fatty deposits that have fallen are repositioned in order to make the face look fuller.
Ideal candidates for face lift surgery are in good overall health, do not use tobacco, drink in moderation and have a positive outlook on life with realistic expectations about what face lift surgery can and cannot do.
