A Rant On Various Sports Related Subjects

June 10th, 2008 by Administrator

This week’s editorial focuses on 3 sports related subjects. It’s a ranting and raving on those subjects. I will try to make this a weekly column going forward. I hope you enjoy it.

NHL IN OUTDOOR LIVING STYLE

The Gary Bettman’s project took a bad turn this year as ESPN stopped covering NHL hockey. I guess ESPN finally woke up to the fact that the NHL isn’t popular anymore and didn’t want to pay outrageous fees for a melted down product.

With player salaries through the roof, the only way for the NHL to pay their hacks (AKA hockey players) is to form outrageous relationships with TV networks.

Through the first round of playoffs the only network covering NHL hockey on a regular basis was OLN. NBC covers games on weekends.

OLN? That’s a real laugh. Talking about taking a step backwards as far as exposure goes. The NHL has become a third tier sport as far as television audience is concerned. The NHL remains a Canadian sport as far as loyalty to the sport and as far as television ratings is concerned.

Bettman should take all the blame for the poor television ratings. It was his grandiose plan to take the NHL to the sunbelt, all in the hopes of greater television revenue. While it lasted about ten years as the critics had predicted, Bentman’s plan is starting to unravel.

The one thing we can all bet on is that Bettman is not fit to run the NHL.

KOBE OR SHAQ?

While Kobe can get a gazillion points a game, can he lead his team to victory? Sadly the answer is no. This was proven last weekend when his LA Lakers blew a 3-1 series lead and was blown away by the Phoenix Suns in the final game of their opening round series.

Shaq on the other hand led his Miami Heat into the second round. Shaq is a dominant player, the guy I would want to build a championship team around.

I laughed when the so called experts were saying that it shows that LA made the right decision when they decided to keep Bryant over O’Neal. That was when the Lakers were up 3-1. Where are those same experts now?

DODGE BALL TWINKIES STYLE

The Minnesota Twins (Twinkies) are playing dodge ball this season. Instead of hitting the baseball, they seem to be dodging the ball. They can’t win ball games and they’re having a terrible time hitting the ball.

Maybe the Twinkies need to start playing hit the ball instead of dodge the ball. Minnesota pitching also needs to improve if the Twins want to rebound from a terrible start to the season.

We’ll have to see what type of baseball they decide to play through the remainder of the season.

Well that’s it until next week. I will try and write a weekly column ranting and raving on various sports related subjects.

If you have any ideas for subject material, email me at support@itstherightway.com.

Deer Hunting on the Move: Stillhunting for Deer, or, Getting off the Stump

June 1st, 2008 by Administrator

Deer hunting on the move, or stillhunting, is commonly misunderstood as to what it is and how to go about it. It is stalking deer, not waiting on a stump or in a blind for the deer to come to you. It can be the most rewarding deer hunting experience you can do. It can also be the most frustrating, since it is a skill which requires you to slow everything everything - your sight, your breath and your walking gait. But the payoffs go beyond the hunt to your better enjoyment of nature itself.

This article will talk about some things I’ve learned while hunting deer in the Vermont woods and oak mast ridges of Wisconsin. These few simple techniques can be used on your next hunt - whether you choose to stillhunt or not, the principles are the same. These techniques will also make your deer hunt a richer experience. It’s all about: you’re outdoors - enjoy the scenery, hunting or not.

Generally, as deer hunters, we think of one thing when we hunt, and that is deer. Not deer in general, but that deer. We are aided in this compulsion by our brains, and our eyes. Let’s talk about eyes first.

Hunt Deer with Soft Focus - See Them as They See You

We see as all predators do - forward, and tightly focussed. Take a look at your average housecat and watch it stalk something. It pursues its object with its eyes narrowed and every muscle relaxed, yet steeled at a moment’s notice to pounce. We share with the cat and all predators having our eyes in the front of our head, designed to focus on a single thing.

However, deer, and all prey species, have eyes designed to detect motion. Deer and all prey species have eyes on the side of their head, and this aids in perceiving motion first, long before the animal can make out whether what they see is a threat, or just some pattern-breaking motion in the woods. When stillhunting for deer, we must adopt to the way they see. We must see motion first, patterns out of sync second, and the deer last. The only way to do this is to relax our focus and broaden our field of vision.

Here’s how to practice. Stand facing a wall, about six to eight feet away from it. Stare hard at a spot on the wall. Raise your arms, index fingers extended, fully out to the side from your head (and slightly behind). Now, keeping your arms straight and your index fingers extended, bring your arms slowly in front of your face. Notice the moment when your fingers come into view - this is your field of vision (FOV).

Now, turn to the wall again. This time, soften your focus so that your eyes, while seeing objects or spots on the wall, do not lock on any one spot. Repeat the index-finger practice. You should see your fingers enter your FOV much earlier than before. It is this type of sight - gained through practice, for it isn’t natural to us anymore - that allows us to see changes in woods patterns, motion - in short, to see deer out in the distance, possibly before they see us.

Now, onto walking.

Walk Toe-Heel, not Heel-Toe

YOu see it all the time - the hunter walking through the woods as if he’s on rice paper.

It doesn’t work. As a hunter, you’re going to make noise. But then, so do deer and other game. So does anything living and breathing in the woods. What you want to avoid is making the rhythmic gait a hunter makes when he’s running, usually after a deer, or doing everything he can to be quiet, when he doesn’t yet see one.

Walking toe-heel is the way to walk, because the palm of your foot can be more flexible in its response to the softwood twigs and deadfall underfoot - like deer, whose hooves make relatively light contact with the forest floor. Walking heel-toe makes for a heavy, stiff step - a human step. Walking heel toe, take a few steps, pause, and, using the soft-focus described above, take in the environment, in a holistic way. Above all else, if you find yourself entering in to a steady, rhythmic gait, break it up. You also want to avoid any obviously sounds coming from anything man-made, such as metal or hard plastic. Bottom line - brushing past an oak stump is o.k. Marching in cadence is not, nor is that canteen banging against your hunting rifle strap buckle.

Know the Wind

Finally, walk into the wind. Yes, this is rule 1. But many hunters, especially those used to staying in a relatively insulated hunting blind, forget this cardinal rule. I’ve stood with my bow drawn on a buck 10 yards away, with the buck clearly trying to figure out what the heck this would-be rambo was up to - only to watch it spring to life once the wind shifts, and thanksgiving was a bit - thinner that year.

Don’t even bother still hunting on blustery days, with no prevailing winds.

The bottom line, when you are hunting deer in this way, is to get used to is slowing yourself down, for hours at a time, and softening your focus to “deer hunt” for motion - not deer.

But act like, see like, deer, become more a part of where you are, and you will reap many rewards - whether you bag a deer or not.

Lighting for Boat Docks

May 20th, 2008 by Administrator

Lighting your boat dock is important for the safety of you and your passengers when entering and exiting your vessel in the dark, and can also be a wonderful feature to have should you want to entertain on your boat dock after the sun has set. Boat dock lighting also ensures that yourself, or others do not unexpectedly end up in the water during the nighttime hours.

There are a variety of different boat dock lighting options available. What choice you make for your particular boat dock lighting has a lot to do with what you plan on doing on the boat dock, and how much money you are willing to spend to light it. You can light your boat dock very simply for a minimal amount of money. Or, you can light your boat dock much more elaborately should your budget be big enough.

A boat dock can be lit with a simple floodlight that is linked to your home’s power and turned on when you depart for a trip, and simply turned off upon your return. Installing a simple flood light can solve your need to light the dock, at a minimal cost, and can ensure that your boat dock is a safe one late in the evening.

Those who plan on doing some entertaining, on their boat dock may want to opt for a more elaborate boat dock lighting plan than a simple flood light. Boaters who often go out at night in their boat may also want to opt for more elaborate and expensive lighting for their boat dock. This type of lighting usually comprised of several lights placed around the dock to ensure that every inch of the dock is visible.

Lighting your boat dock properly can help ensure that you can see the dock well when returning from a voyage, and don’t damage your boat or the dock when you attempt to dock the boat upon your return. A dock that is not lit properly can lend to boats accidentally hitting a corner and damaging the boat or the dock.

Traditional boat dock lights are often more rugged in structure than traditional lights and are designed to be able to withstand the elements they might face while attached to a boat dock.

Boat dock lights can make your boat dock not only a safer but also a much more enjoyable place. Boat dock lights can make night swimming a possibility, and can allow yourself and guests to spend time on the deck well into the night without ever being in the dark.

What is a Pitching Machine?

April 27th, 2008 by Administrator

When you are trying to be good at baseball or softball, you may want to try to get your hitting down pack. Hitting is all about the timing so you must have the proper instructions when it comes to learning to hit. You should have the proper timing when to swing and when to shift your weight. You can learn this by having practice with a pitching machine.

You may want to also watch the pitchers arm and the release of the ball. There are many different styles of pitching machines to help you do this. An arm style-pitching machine is the only type of machine that will give you the same sense of timing. With each one of these pitches you will see the machine’s arm wind up and release the ball. It is the realistic sense of the machine that allows you to practice the same facts in the batting cages as you can on the baseball field.

Many batting cages have these pitching machines that will help with specific procedures when it comes to batting. When you are serious about learning to bat and be good at it, you should start on the pitching machines as soon as possible. You will learn how to bat and even how to pitch at the same time. You will be able to take notice of the machines and learn as you go.

There are many different models of pitching machines. When you are looking to find the right one for you, you should make sure that you do your research. Figure out the areas you need to improve so that you can get the machine that will work best for these situations. Many of the machines will allow you time to adjust to them so that you can get the proper feel and begin the pitching process.

There are machines for all ages too. You can find the right machines to help with fast pitch, slow pitch, and even tee ball. These pitching machines can help with all aspects of the sport. No matter what the age of the person or the type of pitching that you are trying to improve on. No matter what style you are trying to do.

When you find the right pitching machine, you should try to spend as much time on it as possible. The more that you work at it, the better you will become. It is a game about practice and skill and you need to work hard at it. When you have spare time, use it wisely and take advantage of the pitching machines in your area.

Fantasy Football Information: On Draft Day, Don’t Forget the Curry

April 26th, 2008 by Administrator

Fantasy football books, magazines and other experts will likely forget a key ingredient in their recipe for building a fantasy football champion next season. That ingredient is Curry, Ronald Curry, a forth-year wide receiver for the Oakland Raiders. Now, Curry posted some noteworthy fantasy football numbers a year ago, but they weren’t the kind of numbers that make the average fantasy football player race to select him in the top three rounds of their fantasy drafts. This may be a critical oversight.

Curry might have jumped off fantasy football information sheets, if it weren’t for the arrival of Randy Moss to the Raider fold. With Moss as the obvious new number one, and Jerry Porter having just inked a new deal with Oakland, it seems there may not be enough footballs for Curry to even match last year’s decent stats. Don’t let the aforementioned information fool you, as it will the poorly prepared competitors in your fantasy football league.

Curry is a seasoned 25 years old but has only two full years in the National Football League, as he appeared in only one game in his rookie season. Most wide receivers learn how to handle NFL defenses in their third seasons. The great Marvin Harrison didn’t begin to put up big catch and yardage numbers until his fourth season. Now, Ronald Curry may not post the kind of fantasy football numbers of Harrison or Moss, but he is almost guaranteed to improve on last year’s impressive performance.

Remember, Curry played in only 12 games last year. He caught 50 balls for 679 yards and six TDs. He averaged roughly six catches and over 80 yards in his final four games. Also, Moss and Porter will most likely draw the coverage, so Curry will find his openings. He will rarely see double teams, while Moss will see plenty. When the Raiders reach the Red Zone, defenses will watch Moss, and Curry will be able to use his good size to outmuscle linebackers and safeties.

So, there is a very good chance that Curry will improve in every category. If healthy, expect 8-11 TDs, 65-75 catches and 800-plus yards - tremendous fantasy football statistics for a guy who will likely be your second or third receiver.

So, add the Curry to your draft-day recipe, and you should taste the playoffs a few months later.

Soccer Live Betting

March 28th, 2008 by Administrator

Live betting is one of the main sources of income for the bookmaker why?

Well before the match starts there is always large publicity about the coming fixtures for Live matches. They are often 2 strong team facing each other and they are most likely to be telecast throughout the world. Why? It is because a lot of people likes to bet on sports that they are able to view live especially those recreation punters who gets real kick watching their favourites team play and also big-time soccer punters who bet 30K-50K per match. There is the jalan bet or live betting bet and the half-time bet which make it more interesting and more variety for punters to bet. These live matches are matches where the bookmakers makes lots of money through the vigourish and not forgetting fixed match.

Observations

How to you identify whether the match is fixed?

1.) During the match observe the 1st 10 mins if any team scores, the match it is mostly fixed. They will score at the most unimaginable timing like within 30 seconds or 3 mins are common signs.

2.) Pay attention to the speed of both team players. The team that will lose will tends to run slower than the other team. Another point to note is the team that is fixed to win they will fight with all their might to get to the ball and the one that is fixed to lose {note this also refers to team that gives ball but unable to cover the AH given} will miss even inches infront of the goal post. Sometimes the team that is fixed to lose will even score for the next team that is the own goal or they are extremely disorganised at the defence showing no effort in blocking the strikers attack.

3.) Not all footballers are great actors pay close attention to their body language, they will display great agonies while missing clear cut shots but their eyes are secretly laughing away some even had difficulty in controlling their facial expression ,occasionally they subconsciously look into the camera before diverting their eyes swiftly away.

4.) Coach odds decision to remove key players from the team substituting with a less superior player. Consider this why would a coach remove that particular key striker that has just scored the crucial goal and try to defend the 1 goal lead well within the early 50 or 60 mins.

5.) biased refeering decision. Legimate goals claimed as off-side, or clear penalty given as no foul are common signs. Giving unessary penalty to team that don’t deserve it.

What to do when you know its fixed?

1.) Don’t bet big when its livematches. Try to observe 1st before you bet then bet during the 2nd half as thats where the bookies tricks reveals itself.

2.) you need to master the art of odds decoding before you are capable of betting big.

3.) Don’t fully trust what you see in the 1st half as what is obvious is often a trap.

4.) Do not doubt the odds, the odds posted are often set in a way to trap the average punters ,so try to mold your thinking like a bookie and you will see much clearer.

Stock Car Insider - April 10th Issue

March 24th, 2008 by Administrator

Upcoming Events in the World of NASCAR
Need a breather? NASCAR does. Next week, the Nextel Cup teams will take a rest, and return to action on April 22nd at Phoenix International Raceway in the Subway Fresh 500. The Busch teams, however, don’t get it quite so easy. They travel to Nashville for the Pepsi 300 at the Nashville Superspeedway. The Craftsman Truck teams are off until April 29.

Expect the Hendrick drivers to return to dominance in the Subway Fresh 500. Of all current drivers, Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon, and Jimmie Johnson have the best records at Phoenix. Of course, you can never forget Tony Stewart and Mark Martin. Both are
blistering the 2006 schedule!

Next Week’s Schedule:
(all times CST)

Nextel Cup
Off until 4/22/06

Busch Series
4/15/06 - 10:05am Pepsi 300 Qualifying
4/15/06 - 3:03pm Pepsi 300

Craftsman Truck Series

Off till April 29th when they head to Gateway International Raceway.

Who’s Hot?
Is Kasey Kahne pouring it on now or what? After a dismal 2005 season, he is finally answering all skeptics out there. Yes, folks the boy is not only the subject of every female NASCAR fan’s desire, he can also compete at NASCAR’s top level. Through 9 races of the 2006 season, Kasey has finished with 5 top 5’s placing him tied for 3rd in the championship standings.

The next stop on the Nextel Cup schedule is Phoenix. Expect Kasey to finish well there. In 3 starts, his average finish is 16th.

An important fact about all 3 of Kasey’s career Nextel Cup victories is that he was the pole sitter for each race.

Who’s Not?
A big part of competing in NASCAR is luck. There are so many variables that can work against a driver that are out of his control. At any moment, a car could wreck and take out several others. A tire could go flat after running over a piece of debris. Or, just ask Jeff Gordon with his experience in Martinsville a few years ago, a piece of racetrack could break up and damage part of your car.

Such has been the experience of Carl Edwards this year. The witchdoctors have apparently singled him out and cast several spells on the 99 team. After having strong cars and racing strong for much of the season, something always seems to go wrong towards the end of the race.

Carl arguably had one of the strongest cars in the field in yesterday’s Samsung/Radioshack 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. However, with only 77 laps to go, Carl entered turn 2 too fast while racing for the 2nd position. Carl currently sits 22nd in points. He has his work cut out for him if he plans to make the Chase, and duplicate his success from the 2005 season.

Last Week’s Headlines
Recap of the 2006 Samsung/Radioshack 500 at Texas Motor Speedway:

Texas is fast, there’s no doubt about it! It was so fast, I almost can’t remember anything about it. There was your normal race action, Kurt Busch spins yet another driver, etc… But the two things that stand out from yesterday’s Samsung/Radioshack 500 are Kasey Kahne’s 3rd career win and Tony Stewart’s near domination.

Some of the best action of the day came in the closing laps where Tony Stewart tried to hold of a charging Kasey Kahne. Kasey and his car were too good for even the former two-time Nextel Cup champion. In the end, Kasey pulled away from Tony and the rest of the field to win his 3rd career Nextel Cup race, and his 2nd of the 2006 season.

One thing I find utterly amazing is that Tony Stewart has led every race this year. Currently, Tony sits in 5th place, and has had success at the upcoming tracks on the schedule. I expect Tony to make up ground and position himself to be in the top 3 heading towards the middle part of the season.
